for bass clarinet and viola da gamba
The idea for "The magic of the smell of wood" arose on a walk in the forest: I love smelling freshly cut wood, so the question arose whether it is it possible to capture this magic odour in music? The instrumental protagonist of this composition is the lira da gamba or lirone, an historical string instrument with 13 strings that originated in Italy at the beginning of the 16th century and which allows rich playing of chords due to its flat bridge. The piece is dedicated to Iris Wagner-Schweitzer and Albert Schweitzer.
